What Should I Bring to a Sound Bath?
What Should I Bring to a Sound Bath?
If you are coming to your first sound bath, you may be wondering what you need to bring with you.
The most important thing is to make yourself as comfortable as possible. Once the session begins, you will be invited to settle into stillness while the sounds and vibrations move around the room. The more supported and cosy your body feels, the easier it may be to relax.
Here is everything I recommend bringing to one of my regular sound baths.
Something comfortable to lie on
Please bring something suitable to lie down on, such as a yoga mat or padded gym mat.
A little cushioning can make a big difference, particularly when you will be lying in one position for a while. If your mat is quite thin, you may wish to place an extra blanket underneath you for additional comfort and warmth.
Please do not bring an inflatable camping beds. Although they may look comfortable, they can be surprisingly noisy whenever someone moves. Even a small movement can cause squeaking or rustling, which may disturb the stillness of the room and bring other participants out of their relaxed state.
What if I cannot lie on the floor?
You do not have to lie down to experience a sound bath.
If getting down onto the floor, remaining there or standing back up would be difficult, you are very welcome to bring a comfortable chair, some bring garden recliner’s or a camping chair. Make sure it provides enough support for you to relax safely for the duration of the session.
You can also bring a large bean bag if that feels more comfortable and supportive for your body.
There is no “correct” position for receiving a sound bath. What matters is finding an option that allows you to feel settled without causing pain or discomfort.
A warm blanket
Body temperature can naturally drop when you are lying still and deeply relaxing, even if the room felt warm when you first arrived.
Please bring a blanket large enough to cover you comfortably. You may also wish to wear cosy layers and warm socks, particularly during the colder months.
It is always better to have an extra layer available and not need it than to spend the session feeling chilly.
A pillow
Bring a pillow to support your head and neck. You may also find it helpful to bring a second small cushion or bolster to place underneath your knees, especially if lying flat causes discomfort in your lower back.
Taking a moment to support your body properly before the session begins can help you remain comfortable and still.
Water
Please bring a bottle of water with you.
You may wish to have a drink before the sound bath begins and again after the session, when you are gently returning to the rest of your day.
An eye mask
An eye mask is optional, but I do recommend bringing one.
Blocking out the light can make it easier to turn your attention away from the room, reduce visual distractions and settle into your own experience. Some people also find that wearing one helps them feel more comfortable closing their eyes and switching off.
If you do not already own an eye mask, one can be added when booking your ticket.
An open heart and no expectations
Alongside all the practical things, bring an open heart and allow the experience to unfold in its own way.
You do not need to know how to meditate, clear your mind or make anything happen. Some people feel deeply relaxed, some drift off to sleep, some notice emotions or physical sensations, while others simply enjoy a peaceful hour away from everyday life.
Every person is different, and every sound bath can feel different too.
Need to hire a mat or bean bag?
If you do not have a suitable mat, mat hire can be added when you book your ticket. Eye masks can also be selected to purchase alongside your booking.
Please arrange these in advance so that everything can be prepared and ready for you when you arrive.
Some special events may provide different equipment, so always read the information on the individual event before attending.
A quick checklist
Before leaving home, remember:
A yoga mat or padded gym mat
A blanket
A pillow
Water
An optional eye mask
Comfortable layers and warm socks
A chair or large bean bag if lying on the floor is not suitable
An open heart and no expectations
Please also switch your phone off completely before the sound bath begins so that everyone can enjoy the uninterrupted quiet.
Once you are comfortable, there is nothing else you need to do. Simply close your eyes, allow your body to soften and let the sounds meet you exactly where you are.
